Last night I watched a documentary about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster near Pripyat in Ukraine, and it left me thinking about something much closer to home.

It made me think about EcoTech Africa's Health & Environment industry and what that space should really be used for.

Not simply to publish health articles, but to ask difficult questions, bring different disciplines together, examine evidence openly and most importantly turn what we learn into practical knowledge that communities can use.

Our environments have changed enormously over the past several decades.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the chemicals we use, the materials surrounding us, industrial activity, pesticides, waste, plastics and countless other exposures now form part of everyday life.

At the same time, families are confronted with illnesses and health conditions that naturally make us ask questions.

What has changed?

That question is not an accusation.

It is an invitation to investigate.

EcoTech would like to invite health professionals, paediatricians, oncologists, researchers, environmental scientists, toxicologists, universities, laboratories, public-health organisations, industries and communities themselves into this conversation β€” and, where appropriate, indicate how they can be reached should further research, collaboration or community engagement become necessary.

We should be able to examine everything, air pollution, water quality, pesticides, heavy metals, plastics and microplastics, food systems, household exposure, industrial pollution and other environmental factors, while remaining disciplined about the evidence.

Where science has an answer, let us communicate it clearly.

Where evidence is uncertain, let us say so.

Where researchers disagree, let us understand why.

And where a risk can realistically be reduced, let us make that knowledge available to the people who can benefit from it.

Because research should not end inside a laboratory, journal or conference.

It should eventually return to the household, the school, the clinic, the farm and the community.

The real question for EcoTech is therefore not simply:

What might be affecting our health?

It is also:

What can we learn, share and change to create healthier environments for African communities?

EcoTech invites those working across health, science, environment and community development to contribute evidence, African research, practical experience and constructive perspectives.

We are not looking for someone to blame.

We are looking for knowledge that can help people live healthier lives.
